Nervous Norwegian winner Reitan overshadows Hovland in Sun City
Nervous Kristoffer Reitan overshadowed fellow Norwegian Viktor Hovland with a one-shot victory on Sunday in the Nedbank Golf Challenge at South African resort Sun City.
After taking a five-stroke lead into the final round, the 27-year-old survived a tense finish to post a par 72 and a 17-under total of 271.
A par four at the final hole sufficed to keep him in front of joint runners-up Don Bradbury (66) from England and South African Jayden Schaper (68).
Hovland is ranked 13th in the world having won seven times on the USPGA circuit and was the star attraction at the Gary Player Country Club 170 kilometres (105 miles) north west of Johannesburg.
But his opening round 69 left him six shots behind leader Reitan and he never subsequently mounted a serious challenge while his compatriot stayed top of the leaderboard throughout.
Bradbury claimed six birdies and Schaper four in the final round, but Reitan was erratic with four birdies and four bogeys as his lead dwindled to just one stroke with three holes remaining.
Playing together, the trio all parred the final three holes, giving the Norwegian ranked 59th his second European title after the Belgium Open last February.
"I had nerves and fear throughout the final round. It was a situation I had never been in before -- leading by five with one round to go," Retain told reporters.
"I was so relieved to get over the line in front. Don (Bradbury) and Jayden (Schaper) kept pushing me. Both of them played brilliant golf today.
"My nerves affected some of my shots, but I became courageous during the final three holes. I am very proud of my victory.
"I am a very demanding golfer -- just ask my caddie. Today is the greatest day of my career. Now I just need to learn how to control my nerves a little better."
