The Albany Gazette - MBA Search Fund Alliance Launches Anonymous Discord Community, Begins Fall ETA Club Outreach

LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESS Newswire / October 8, 2026 / The MBA Search Fund Alliance, an independent community supporting students, searchers, operators, and others navigating the search fund and lower-middle-market acquisition ecosystem, today announced the launch of a vetted, pseudonymous Discord community alongside a Fall outreach initiative with MBA ETA clubs and student organizations.

The launch marks the next stage of an effort that began in 2025, when the Alliance first started building a community around transparency, searcher support, and shared experience.

Formal investor surveys followed in 2026, drawing 233 firsthand participants across MBA programs and active search funds.
But the strongest signal has been broader than any single survey.

Since the Alliance began, it has received hundreds of sign-ups, inquiries, messages, introductions, and offers to help from students, active searchers, former CEOs, and operators who wanted to share what they had learned and help the next person navigate the ecosystem more effectively.

More than 30 terminated or litigated former CEOs have also engaged with the Alliance, often sharing experiences they had never discussed publicly.

Built From People Raising Their Hands

The Alliance was never intended to become simply a ranking organization. Its growth has been driven by people volunteering their experiences. Some wanted to discuss investors. Others wanted to talk about attorneys, brokers, lenders, diligence providers, board relationships, employment agreements, or what happens after an acquisition closes. Others simply wanted a place where they could ask questions they were uncomfortable asking publicly.

Kevin Hong, Founder of the MBA Search Fund Alliance, said:

"What surprised us most was how many people raised their hands and said, 'I want to help.' Searchers sent us stories. Former CEOs reached out. Students wanted to participate. People introduced us to others who had been through difficult situations. That willingness to contribute is really what this community has been built on."

The new Discord is designed to give those conversations a permanent home.

Banking Real Receipts & Unfiltered Legal Artifacts

To eliminate denial and bridge the discrepancy between academic narratives and boardroom realities, the Discord repository is already banked with actual, anonymized legal documents submitted directly by operators.
These live primary records include:

• Separation Agreements & Severance Reality Sheets
• Aggressive LLC Operating Agreements & Clawback Clauses
• Equity Stripping & Forfeiture Notifications
• Structural Push-Out & Board Termination Precedents

This repository is actively expanding as more searchers contribute documents to establish an undeniable dataset of bad-actor investor patterns, deal circumvention, and biased service provider frameworks.

Addressing Institutional Self-Preservation & Conflicts of Interest
A central reason the ecosystem has struggled to address predatory governance is a systemic culture of self-preservation across traditional capital providers and academic programs.

For years, the standard institutional line regarding bad governance, equity stripping, and forced ousters has been that these are "isolated incidents" or "exaggerations." However, admitting the true scale of these structural flaws would require institutions to acknowledge that years of marketing, class case studies, and university narratives may have intentionally omitted critical risks that jeopardize student and searcher safety.

Furthermore, deep financial and advisory ties between traditional institutional funds and university centers create clear conflicts of interest, making academia and traditional sponsors reluctant to police bad actors. Because institutional mechanisms have proven hesitant to protect operators, the MBA Search Fund Alliance was formed to provide an independent, operator-led counterweight.

Why Anonymity Matters
Members apply for access and are vetted against their LinkedIn profile and professional background. Once admitted, they select their own pseudonym.

Posts and submitted reports carry only that pseudonym.

That structure grew directly from what the Alliance saw during its first year: people were often willing to speak privately about difficult investor relationships, terminations, litigation, service-provider problems, or governance disputes, but were reluctant to discuss the same experiences publicly.

Hong said:

"A lot of the most useful information in this industry never reaches the next searcher because it lives in private conversations. The Discord gives people somewhere to compare notes without attaching every comment to their professional identity."

The community is equally intended to surface positive experiences, including investors, attorneys, brokers, lenders, diligence firms, and advisers members would gladly work with again.

Supporting Searchers More Broadly

The broader mission of the Alliance is to support searchers wherever useful information is missing. That can mean helping someone understand an investor relationship before taking capital. It can mean hearing from a former CEO about what they wish had been in their employment agreement.

It can mean comparing business brokers, attorneys, diligence firms, lenders, or other service providers. And it can mean connecting someone facing a difficult situation with people who have already lived through it.

Hereford Johnson, Founder at Caprae Capital, said:

"The value is not that one organization has all the answers. It is that hundreds of people have pieces of the answer. If people are willing to contribute those experiences, the next searcher can make a much better decision."

The Alliance has increasingly received requests to expand community feedback into business brokers, law firms, diligence providers, lenders, and other participants in the acquisition process. Those requests are helping shape future tools, but the larger mission remains the same: make firsthand experience easier for searchers to access.

Making the Rounds With ETA Clubs This Fall

This Fall, the Alliance plans to make the rounds with MBA ETA clubs and student organizations to introduce the community, share what it has learned, gather more perspectives, and encourage students and searchers to participate.

The objective is not simply to distribute rankings.

It is to bring more people into the conversation before they make decisions that can shape years of their careers.
That includes selecting investors, choosing service providers, negotiating governance, evaluating board dynamics, and learning from people who have already gone through the process.

Hong said:

"Every class of searchers learns something the next class should know. If we can capture even a fraction of that knowledge and make it accessible, the whole ecosystem gets stronger."

A Broader Mission

The MBA Search Fund Alliance increasingly views its surveys, rankings, reporting, and Discord community as parts of a larger effort.
The mission is to help searchers make better decisions, avoid preventable mistakes, find people worth working with, understand the realities of the model, and have somewhere to turn when the process gets difficult.

That mission depends on participation.

The Alliance's growth so far has come from people sharing stories, making introductions, responding to surveys, and asking how they can contribute.
